Yesterday I had the privilege of doing a stone cutting demo at the Silvera Jewelry School in Berkeley, CA.  In between demos, there was socializing and gem sales to be made.  It was my first time doing a demo, and my first ever gem sale; I was flying high on adrenaline the whole time!

I'm still digesting the experience.  I'll write more and post some pictures soon.  Above is a nice stone that sold at the show.  So long old pal.

I am privileged to be a guest demonstrator at the Silvera Jewelry School in Berkeley, CA on December 14.    I'll show how a cabochon is cut from rough, by slabbing, sawing, grinding, sanding and polishing.  Special emphasis on cutting cabochons with jewelry artists in mind: shoulder height, doming, faceting, irregular shapes, and so on.

Open House Friday December 14, 1pm to 8 pm
Silvera Jewelry School 1105 Virginia Street, Berkeley CA 94702
Soldering Jewelry with Joe Silvera
Enameling with a Torch with Anat Silvera

Extremely Rare!  N2 Solid Black Ethiopian Opal.  This is an amazing stone!!!  I just bought this rough in Anaheim at the American Opal Society show in November.  I'll need to hold on to this stone for at least a year to make sure it is stable.  WOW!!!

I cut these opals this summer, and I'm very pleased with the results!

These look best when set in 14k Gold.  These are AAA and AA Grade Ethiopian Crystal Opal from Wello, Ehthiopa.  This material was only discovered in 2008, and I've been cutting it since 2009.  The best stones in this lot can sell for several hundred dollars per carat.
